College swimmers and divers from around the country made a spectacular splash last month with Super Sports Systems as they posted conference victories for their schools and got ready for the NCAA.

Here are some of the highlights.

Oneonta Posts First-Ever NCAA Qualifier
3S coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse at Oneonta College in New York just posted the first NCAA qualifier in the history of the school. It was the first time in her career as a coach, too.  

Under Coach Schuler-Ghiorse, who relies on 3S training plans, Oneonta junior swimmer Michelle Sano won an individual SUNYAC title – a first in the history of the Red Dragons. Sano took first place in the 100-yard backstroke event. Later, during the preliminaries, Sano posted the best time by nearly a half second, clocking at 59.42. Her time in the prelims was good enough to make the B cut standard for the NCAA Div. III championship meet. Her time was also three seconds faster than her seeded time of 1:02.45 entering the event.

“She’s one of my model athletes,” Chris says. “A lot of the workouts and practices for her were developed with the 3S profile. We put Michelle in as one of our mid-distance model representations. Her hitting a 59 low was better than ever.”

Is Coach Schuler-Ghiorse getting good value with 3S?

“Oh my God, yes,” she says, without hesitation. “It gives me a frame of reference, an outline with which I can set up my practice. It gives me the confidence to throw some hard yardage at them and to know there’s scientific evidence to back it up. The kids really like it. They adapted to it right away. And we’re really impressed with their results.”

Coach Schuler-Ghiorse says she will be using 3S tools and techniques next season as she preps her athletes to greater performance and championships.

Harvard Women Claim ECAC Title

The Harvard University Crimson women under head coach Tim Murphy took the 2009 ECAC Championships. The men’s team captured second, behind Navy. Harvard was 8-1 for the regular season. Up Next for the Crimson: the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y.

Iowa Sets 7 School Records, Posts 3 NCAA Cuts

The University of Iowa broke multiple swimming and diving school records as the Hawkeyes finished competition at the 2009 Big Ten Championships. Iowa set seven school records, posted three NCAA B cut performances and recorded 34 collegiate bests. Junior diver Deidre Freeman earned Iowa’s Highest Point Award for scoring the most individual points at the meet.

"We had some outstanding swims and dives at the meet, and ended up rewriting our record books," said Hawkeye Head Coach Marc Long.

U. of Wyoming Smashes 16 School Records

University of Wyoming divers and swimmers under head coach Tom Johnson produced three Mountain West Conference Champions, broke 16 school records and one MWC record. Wyoming diving coach Ben Herdt won the 2009 MWC Diving Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams.

"All in all I am proud of our women's team. It came close at the end but they rallied and surprised me this week," Johnson said. "The divers were incredible, I am very proud of Ben winning coach of the year."

The Cowboys and Cowgirls took third place at the championships in Oklahoma City. The Cowboys matched their highest finish in school history; the Cowgirls have never been higher than fourth before this year.

The UW diving team now heads to Austin, TX, for the NCAA Zone "E" Diving Championships.

Duquesne U. Takes 3^rd at Atlantic 10; Best in School History

Duquesne University’s women's swimming team under head coach Dave Sheets finished third at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, matching the best finish in school history set at last year's A-10 event.

New Orleans Swimmers and Divers Take 5^th at Sun Belt Conference

The University of New Orleans swimming and diving teams both placed fifth at the Sun Belt Conference in Nashville.

Calling the swimmers’ performance “amazing,” head coach Randy Horner said, “the team is definitely heading in the right direction and that we're building a team to win this thing in the future.”

Overall, the Privateers broke 32 records with both teams’ final placements ranking as the top finish for either squad in school history.

The women squad set 17 school records, helping the team advance a spot after three straight years of finishing sixth. The men set 15 marks, finishing higher than any placement during the team's history competing in the Metro Championships from 1989-1992.

Ryder University Swimming Sets 21 Records at Metro Atlantic Conference

The Ryder University Broncs under head coach Steve Fletcher set 21 records at the Metro Atlantic Athletic conference championship. The Ryder women took the championship, while team leadership won three MAAC Coach of the Year awards. Ryder also captured three of the four MAAC Outstanding Performer of the Meet awards.

The team rolled on to even greater success as Ryder set several conference records at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. The women finished second out of 23 teams and the men third out of 26 teams.

Coach Fletcher was voted ECAC Female Coach of the Year

“We train as a team knowing that the points we pick up in consolations are just as important as winning an event,” Fletcher said. “The conference championship was 365 days of preparation. The teams came into the season wanting to work hard and push themselves and they did.”

This marks the third MAAC championship for the Ryder women’s squad, having also won in 2000-01 and 2002-03. Both the Rider men and women placed second last season.

Loyola Sets New Records at ECAC

Loyola University head coach Brian Loeffler and the men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped their season with several record-setting performances at the 2009 ECAC Championships.

The men's team placed fourth out of 23 teams with 343 points, while the women were seventh, in a field of 26 teams, with 295 points. The Naval Academy won the men's meet, and Harvard University took the women's title.

The Loyola women's team set two new school records in the 100 Back and the 800 Freestyle Relay. Courtney Trivino bested her own time and set a Loyola record in the 100 Back with a time of 56.95 for fourth place. Mary Henkels also swam in the event and finished in sixth place at 58.08.

The men had two top finishes in the finals of the 200 Medley Relay, with two team members winning 2009 ECAC Champions in the event.

The women's team finished the weekend with four new school records and the men's team had three ECAC Champions, marking the first time in Loyola history that the school had first place finishes in the ECAC competition.

UNLV Claims Mountain West Conference

UNLV won the Mountain West Conference men's championships with a final score of 886.5. Following the Rebels was Air Force (613), Wyoming (551), BYU (539.5), TCU (401), and Utah (326).

For the women, BYU took home the Mountain West conference title followed by UNLV (585.5), Wyoming (483), Utah (468.5), CSU (452.5), San Diego State (375), TCU (354.5), New Mexico (211), and Air Force (128).

FGCU Women Triumph at 2009 CCSA Championships

The Florida Gulf Coast University Women’s Swimming and Diving team won the 2009 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. The Eagles notched a total of 887 points to pick up the title.

“We won our conference by 234 points!” reports Head Coach Neal Studd, a member of the 3S family. “Last year we lost by 26 points.”
Studd was named coach of the year. Additionally, all the women Eagles posted best times during the championship.
“We are very excited about the season,” Studd said. “We were as high as 4th in the collegeswimming.com mid major poll.”

Lady Vols of Tennessee Post 7 NCAA Cuts

At the SEC Championships, the Lady Vols of the University of Tennessee had seven NCAA 'A' cut performances, 28 'B' cut times and 35 season-bests.

"I am in awe of the 3S program," said Matt Kredich, Head Swim Coach of the Vols. "It has taught me a more productive way to train, and has helped me further my coaching career."

U of Richmond Sets Conference Records at Atlantic 10 Events

The University of Richmond won four events at the Atlantic 10 Conference in Buffalo , NY , setting conference records in three. The UR Spiders also took their eighth-consecutive conference title, with Senior Lauren Beaudreau named the Championship's Most Outstanding Performer for the second time. She won seven medals, six of them gold, and broke five A-10 Championship records.

Beaudreau shattered a conference record in the 200 breast (2:11.43), then broke the A-10 record for the 400 free relay with a time of 3:22.87 in the final event.

"The whole night was awesome," head coach Matt Barany said.

Barany was A-10 Coach of the Year in 2006, 2009, 2008.

“This is my sixth season using 3S,” he said. “It is something that we reference quite frequently and I do think that it has been impactful on my development as a coach. The thing it does allow us to do the best is it is so individualized; it allows me to cater training plans to the individual. So it’s an important part of what we do.”
