2005-06 Swimming Recap: Silences The Doubters
All is well that ends well -- The cliché fit the 2005-06 Richmond
women's swimming and diving squad. This season's ending was
"well," some might say even better than well. The Spiders, led by
first-year coach Matt Barany, silenced a number of doubters by
backing up the cliché and then some. Richmond posted seven new
school records, on its way to four new Atlantic 10 marks at
season's end. Throw on a second All-American in as many years, and
those who were thinking the Spiders would be in jeopardy of not
continuing their string of four-straight A-10 titles with only two
seniors on the roster, were now wondering if the domination will
ever cease.

Seven Carthage Swimmers and Five Relay Teams Invited to NCAA
Championship
The Carthage College men’s swimming team won
its first-ever
College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship
on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 9-11 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in
Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men’s championship broke a nine-year Wheaton
(Ill.) stranglehold on the conference title. The Thunder had won
nine-straight titles since 1997 and 15 of the last 16 going back to
1990, with Illinois Wesleyan University winning the 1996
championship. The Red Men have finished second three times,
including 2004 and 2005. Carthage won the championship with 1,072
points, followed by Wheaton College (Ill.) second at 965, Millikin
University third at 497, Illinois Wesleyan fourth at 337, North
Central College fifth at 212 and Augustana College (Ill.) sixth with
166 points.
And this just in from some
of our non-professional coaches...
Thea is
10-year-old Oliver's mom and coach. You might remember his
incredible story from last year.
Dear Sergei...
Because
of my illness Oliver had to train by himself quite often. For company,
Nathan (Oliver's brother) aged 6 practiced with him. Nathan
swam at a few meets as well, and caused quite a sensation when he
walked away with 7 new records and most of the gold's for the under 9
events.
As for Oliver's results? Just DANDY! 4 new national records,
wonderful PB'S in every stroke and 2 victor ludorim's. Made mom very
proud and determined to continue. Both my children obviously love the
sport.
Thea (Oliver's mom)
Even though I'm not a coach, Sergei, I thought that
this forum would help us out, considering our situation. We
started using the 3S program October 2005, because we needed some
guidance.
Not knowing what to do, I have just used the 3S
program for my daughter, who wants to swim. She is 17 and has no
coach or team. It has been great being able to print her
workouts from the site.
She just finished a meet in Los Angeles. A
Championship meet and she swam her best times in 5 of the 8 events
she swam. She had even added in prelims to still be able to
come back in finals and drop 3 seconds in her 200 Back and 2 seconds
in her 100 Breast.
We have had coaches at the swim meet in awe of what
my daughter is doing "by herself".
Thank you,
Valerie (mom) and Jennifer (swimmer) |
